Dale L. Bernett, 89 of La Crosse, died on Friday, October 5, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health System, La Crosse. He was born in Sparta, Wis., on September 10, 1929 to Thomas and Odessa (Williams) Bernett. He grew up on his parent’s farm in rural Sparta and graduated from Sparta High School in 1947. He always shared many great childhood memories.
When he turned 18 he left home and traveled the country by “thumb”. He worked a host of different jobs gaining many lifetimes of experience. Upon returning he married Evaline Blegen whom he later divorced, and in 1979 he married Peggy Olsen.
Dale was very active as a business owner in Viroqua and was involved in several business organizations. Upon moving to La Crosse, he continued his business success.
Dale loved the outdoors as a hunter and a photographer. He enjoyed bowling, traveling, the Wisconsin Badgers and many family get togethers’ at “Table Top” located on the family farm in Sparta. He loved his pets and a good martini. Deer camp was always a hoot. He was a Civil War buff and loved telling stories about his adventures and cruising with Peggy in his Mercedes with the top down.
Dale and Peggy cherished their home on Lake Neshonoc. After retiring, they enjoyed many camping trips and traveled to Cuba and Spain.
Dale is survived by his wife Peggy, son Tom (Carol) of Onalaska, daughter Kristen (Todd) of Melrose, stepdaughter Deanne, stepson Daniel, stepson Robert, 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by 8 siblings (Dale was the youngest and last living), son Robert and daughter Karen.
A celebration of Dale’s life will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018 from 4 until 7 P.M. at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services La Crosse chapel; 200 West Ave. So. Private family burial will take place at a later date.
