Charlene A. Byers (nee Limberg), 87 of La Crosse, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse. She was born June 18, 1935, in La Crosse to Frank and Marion (Wagner) Limberg and graduated from Aquinas High School. On October 30, 1956, she married Merle Byers at St. John’s Catholic Church in La Crosse.
She enjoyed fishing as long as Merle baited the hook and took the fish off the hook. Charlene also enjoyed polka music and playing the accordion, as well as watching college sports and the Green Bay Packers. Charlene liked to tell the story of how she met Roger Staubach here in La Crosse at the St. Francis Hospital.
Charlene is survived by two sons; Michael (Amy) Byers of La Crosse and David Byers of Hager City, WI; four grandchildren, Katie, Tessa, Rick and Leah; two brothers, Richard Limberg of Brookfield, WI and Eugene Limberg of La Crosse; a sister-in-law, Louise Limberg of La Crosse and brother-in-law Vernon Romskog of West Salem along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Merle; an infant son, Joseph; a stillborn baby; a sister, Judy Romskog; a brother, Dean Limberg; daughter-in-law, Roxanne Byers and a sister-in-law, Beverly Limberg.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Breast Cancer Society of America.
A prayer service will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 21st at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 200 West Avenue South, La Crosse with Rev. Brian D. Konopa officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the prayer service.
Visitation will be held one hour before the services. Burial will be held in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park.
