Carlene Sanborn

May 28, 1931 — December 22, 2024

La Crosse

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Carlene Sanborn, a beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, who left us peacefully with family at her side on December 22, 2024, at the age of 93.

Carlene was born in Derry, New Hampshire, in 1931 to Dorothy Benson and John Caldwell. She grew up during the Great Depression, a time that shaped her resilience and compassion. Her childhood was filled with playing in the woods, swimming in and ice skating on Beaver Lake, and enjoying her extended family.

A dedicated nurse and nursing teacher, Carlene trained at Nashua Memorial Hospital, where she gained invaluable hands-on experience. Her career was marked by her unwavering commitment to caring for others, a trait that defined her both professionally and personally.

In 1953, Carlene married the love of her life, Irwin Bruce Sanborn. They lived most of their married life in Wisconsin Rapids, WI and built a beautiful family, raising four biological and four adopted children with boundless love and devotion. Carlene's nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family, as she was a cherished member of her church and community, always ready to lend a helping hand. She was an early supporter of the League of Women Voters and served the Girl Scouts of America for many years.

Carlene's life was enriched by her love of books, a passion she shared with many through her involvement in book clubs. She believed in the power of education and the importance of lifelong learning, values she instilled in her children and grandchildren.

After Bruce and Carlene Retired, they traveled the world, creating lasting memories and deepening their bond. Despite facing challenges with Bruce’s health, Carlene's optimism and strength never wavered. Her philosophy of life – work hard, read books, respect all people, and leave the bathroom cleaner than you found it – served as a guiding light for all who knew her.

Carlene is survived by her brother John Caldwell, Jr., children; Rachel, Julia, Martha, Ruth, James, John, Elizabeth, and Brian; 19 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bruce; sister, Louise and grandson Kinhthi.

Carlene's legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those she touched. A celebration of her life will be held at First Congregational Church of Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday June 7th, 2025 beginning at 2:00p.m. The family wishes to thank Eagle Crest South staff and Mayo Clinic Hospice team for the compassionate and knowledgeable care. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations be made to Eagle Crest Communities Employee Tuition Program in La Crosse, WI or First Congregational Church of Wisconsin Rapids, WI.
