Carl Edward Tabbert

January 5, 1943 — September 22, 2021

Carl Edward Tabbert, 78 of La Crosse was born to Edward I. and Edna L. (Solberg) Tabbert on January 5, 1943, in La Crosse. Carl left the world we know on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, due to complications of COVID at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. Carl graduated from Central High School in 1961, afterwards, he attended UW-La Crosse and WWTC. On June 22, 1965, Carl joined the Air Force and served until September 16, 1968, leaving the Air Force with an honorable discharge. During this time, Carl served in Thailand during the Vietnam War. After serving his time in the military, Carl’s sense of adventure had him traveling the United States with different jobs. Eventually he settled back in La Crosse working for various companies before working for the City of La Crosse MTU for over 20 years. Through his life he enjoyed the game of golf, pool, and numerous card games, which he shared the love of with all his friends and family. On August 28, 2009, Carl married Kathleen Subjek. Carl shared his passion for cooking with Kathy and family, making gourmet meals, perfecting new recipes as well as critiquing anyone else’s cooking. Kathy and Carl traveled across various states, thoroughly appreciating their winters between Arizona, South Padre Island, Texas and Santa Fe, New Mexico. In his free time, Carl enjoyed anything that was related to history, completing a crossword puzzle, reading, playing Candy Crush and a good cold gin and tonic. He was a proud member of the American Legion and the Vietnam Veterans of Foreign Wars. Carl is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Tabbert; his sister, Rita (Roger Yeske) Tabbert and numerous cousins. He was the proud papa of his grandkids through marriage and their families; Julie (Jeff) Richgels and their children, Danielle, Michael and John; Michael (Stephanie Buck) Subjek; Rebecca (B.J.) Hamilton and their children, Will and Taylor. He was preceded in death by his parents, and Christopher, whom he had a special place in his heart. Carl’s family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Gundersen Health System who cared for him during his illness. A visitation will be held at 9:30 A.M. followed by the memorial service at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, September 28th at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 200 West Avenue South, La Crosse with Rev. Rick Roberts officiating. Military honors will follow immediately after the services. Entombment will follow at a later date in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery, Spooner, Wisconsin.
