Arthur H. Streitz of Onalaska was called to his eternal rest on August 8, 2018 at the age of 95. Arthur was born March 8, 1923 in La Crosse to Ferdinand and Caroline (Posbeck) Streitz.
On December 12, 1941, at the age of 18, Art enlisted in the United States Navy five days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served his first seven months in Texas training to be a gunner's mate and was assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington, also known as the "Blue Ghost" as named by Tokyo Rose. Art served in the South Pacific from July of 1942 until his discharge on October 31, 1945.
On February 2, 1944 he married Dolores Nolte of La Crosse in Tacoma, Washington while still serving in the Navy. After his discharge Art & Dolores returned to La Crosse and Art found employment at the Trane Company and worked there for 40 years retiring in 1985.
Art possessed many handyman skills including woodworking, plumbing, roofing, painting and helped many neighbors and friends with his talents. Art and Dolores traveled to many states fondly remembering their many trips to "Ships Reunions" where he joined and reminisced with fellow ship mates.
Art is survived by his two daughters, Sharon (Allen) Bills and Carol (Steve) Garber; three grandchildren, Richard Bills, Tia Long and Mandi Garber; three great-grand children; three special nieces Joan, Kim, and Shelby Gardner and her son, Ryker; nephews, Kent (Kara) Gardner and their son, August "Gus", and David Bina; his special friend, companion and caregiver Beverly Davy and her children Steve, Dan, Mike, Brian and Audra.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 66 years, his brother, Henry and sister, Aileen.
Arthur's family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the Gundersen Clinic doctors
and nurses and for the exceptional care given by the Gundersen Hospice team.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at the Schumacher Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Avenue South, La Crosse. Visitation will be held from 10 A.M. until time of service. Pastor David Leistekow will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
