Alan P. "Al" Bliss

April 16, 1967 — August 5, 2022

Alan P. “Al” Bliss, 55, of LaCrosse, WI passed away in his home on Friday, August 5, 2022. Al was born to Patrick and Donna Bliss in Beloit, WI. After graduating from Beloit Catholic High School, he continued his education at UW LaCrosse, WI earning his Bachelor’s degree.
Al Bliss was employed as a Health Educator for 27 years with the La Crosse County Health Department. In this role Al was a frequent speaker to community groups about substance use prevention ranging from tobacco, alcohol, heroin, and opioids. He also provided media interviews on topics related to his program responsibilities. Al developed expertise in tobacco prevention and control, alcohol prevention and climate changes as a public health issue. One of Al’s greatest contributions was coordinating the Heroin and Illicit Drug Taskforce for La Crosse County which transitioned into the Alliance to HEAL (Halting the Effects of Addiction Locally). Through the Alliance to HEAL, Al coordinated multiple workgroups and partners from healthcare, fire and law enforcement agencies, municipal leaders, health and human services, education, and treatment agencies in the La Crosse Community. Al’s expertise was sought out by other partners across the state.
Al’s favorite pastime was motorcycling. Whether a short evening ride or a weeklong adventure to Sturgis, Al could always be found carving his way through the Coulee Valley region on his Harley. Bodybuilding and physical fitness were also a big part of Al’s life. He spent many years lifting and working out at the YMCA. An equal passion of Al’s was family time and included riding bicycles, rollerskating with his daughter, and oddly enough, “raiding the candy dish”. But his greatest joy in life was his daughter, Maddy.
Al leaves behind to cherish his memory, his daughter, Madeline Bliss; mother, Donna Bliss; father, Patrick Bliss; brother, Dann Bliss; sister, Maripat (Reid) Ribbon; nephew, Josh (Joni) Bliss; great niece, Fiona; niece, Jennifer Bliss; great nephews, Jaiden and Malakei; aunt, Kathy (Herb) Stoltenberg; cousins, Paul, Andy, Tim; uncle, Mike (Emily) Bliss; cousins, Jeff, and Cindy; His memory will also be held in the hearts of former wife, Sharon Bliss; step-children, Damian Thundercloud; Ashlie (Andrew Loomis) Cahoon; and step- grandchild, Arlo Loomis; along with numerous friends and co-workers. Al is surrounded by the love of his grandparents, Mary and Alvin Stauber; Charlette and Harold Bliss, who passed before him.
Everyone Al knew will greatly cherish his impact on their lives, whether through love, family, friendship or his humor. So if by chance, on a rainy day, you hear thunder, stop and smile, and remember, it might very well be Al, thundering through the clouds on his heavenly Harley. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 26, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Ave. S, LaCrosse, WI 54601.
