Duane Arlen “Red” Johnson, 82, of Brice Prairie, died on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 in his home. He was born on August 8, 1934 in La Crosse to Theodore and Emma (Quadzinski) Johnson. He attended Immanuel Lutheran Grade School and graduated from Logan High School in 1952. Duane served with the US Army from 1955 – 1957 as a staff sergeant in France. He also served for 10 years with the Army Reserves. Duane married Janis Deno on October 25, 1957 in Little Shamrock Union Church. He had worked at Nelson’s Men’s Wear on the Northside for 32 years. He then worked at Foxmeyer Drug, formerly McKesson Drug, until his retirement. After retirement Duane bagged groceries at the Onalaska Festival Foods until he was 80. Duane was a founding member of the Brice Prairie First Responders, a charter member of the Brice Prairie Lion’s Club, a member of the Holmen American Legion Post 284, and a longtime member of St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Onalaska where he served on church council and as an usher. Duane enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, tinkering, and was famous for his one-liners.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janis, two children, Scott A. (Stephanie) Johnson and Kristi (Greg) Sunday, three grandchildren, Jessica (Kohl) Adamson, Matthew (girlfriend Jackie) Sunday, and Michelle Johnson and her half-brother Peter Peterson, two great-grandchildren, Eliza and Liam, a brother Theodore (Pat) Johnson Jr., a sister Jeanne Richling, a sister-in-law Dawn Johnson, a brother-in-law Ben Pippen, many nieces and nephews, and his special dog Remmi. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Vern and two sisters, Corella “Sally” Wallace and Muriel Pippen.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 31 st , 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Onalaska. Pastor William Bader, Pastor Norris Baumann, and Pastor Dan Olson will officiate. Burial will be in the Shamrock Union Church Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of services. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
