Tamara L. “Tami” Nowland, 66, of La Crosse died on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center after a four-year struggle with stomach cancer. She passed away peacefully with family at her side. She was born to Arthur L. and Doris (Schaffer) Scholl on Nov. 13, 1949, in La Crosse, and graduated from La Crosse’s Central High School and from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in music. Tami worked as an anesthesia tech at Gundersen Lutheran for 30 years until her retirement in January 2012. On June 24, 1989, she married Paul Nowland at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in La Crosse. Tami was an active member of Bells Coulee Lutheran Church, of rural Bangor, where she played the organ for many years. She was also a member of the Xi Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, Sons of Norway, and Norskedalen. Tami is survived by her parents-in-law, Ron and Frieda Nowland of La Crosse; sisters-in-law Naomi (Scott Johnson) Nowland of Clear Lake, Iowa; and Grace McMichael of Oklahoma, and brother-in-law Jon (Christi) Nowland of La Crosse. She is further survived by her nephews Zachary Johnson and Ronald Briggs; niece Rachel Briggs; several great-nieces (including her goddaughter Michelle Martinez); and her godson Seth Busness. Tami was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov 17, 2016 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2135 Weston St., La Crosse, with Pastor Bruce Iverson officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse, next to her beloved Paul. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Bells Coulee Lutheran Church, Norskedalen or the charity of one’s choice.
