Joseph H. Schubert, 89, of Onalaska, passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord on August 14,2016, surrounded by his family, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.
He was born on February 12, 1927 to Joseph H. Schubert and Louise (Prochnow) Schubert of La Crosse. Joe went to school in La Crosse and continued onto college where he found his love for math. Joe served in the army as an MP and was stationed in Hawaii after the end ofWWII. He often joked and told stories of some of his encounters with the trouble makers while stationed in Hawaii. He returned home and eventually became part owner of Schubert Bros Meat Market on 13th Street, along with his cousin John Schubert. Joe and John were the 4th generation of Schuberts to own the Schubert Bros Meat Market. There were many who passed through the doors of the meat market during all those years of business. While some patrons came for the camaraderie, most came for the prime meat. However, no one left without a sample of their famous ring bologna.
Joe married Jean Holmay on January 27, 1950; they shared a home for 66 years that Joe built on the shores of Lake Onalaska. Those who knew Joe were often amazed by his knowledge and capability of being truly a jack-of-all-trades. One could find him rebuilding an engine, wiring a house, fixing a furnace, repairing a washing machine, plumbing a house, or framing a house. His capabilities were endless, and he was always there to help whoever needed it. Joe truly had a kind and gentle soul. He knew the true meaning of family, and his love and dedication to his family knew no bounds. Joe was active in his church, enjoyed hunting with his son and friends, and appreciated the dogs that were part of his life. Most of all, he loved to tinker on a new project. It was always a great joy to talk with Joe because of his vast knowledge on so many topics.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Jean Schubert; his daughter, Paula (Clarence) Knutson of Onalaska; his son, Joe Schubert (Cathy Gordon) of Mindoro; his grandson, Chad (Laura) Knutson of Onalaska; his two great-grandchildren, Anna and Troy Knutson; his grand-dogs, and other relatives and friends.
