Joseph H. Steidl, 92, of La Crosse, passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
He was born on June 2, 1924, on St. Mary’s Ridge in rural Cashton, Wis., to Theodore and Agnes (Flock) Steidl. He married Irene “Peachie” Banasik on March 2, 1946, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in La Crosse. She preceded him in death on May 27, 2005.
Joe had been employed at Allis-Chalmers in La Crosse for 25 years until the plant’s closing. He then worked at the Trane Company for just under 30 years before retiring. For many years, Joe also did odd jobs for Howard Wettstein along with his good friend, Ernie Stalsberg.
Joe was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Parish where he was active in the Men’s Club. He was also a member of the 25 Year Club at Allis Chalmers and a past member of the Catholic Sokols. Joe enjoyed playing euchre with his friends at Strasser’s and playing cribbage with family almost daily. He was also very proud of his vegetable garden and gave away almost everything that he grew.
He is survived by three daughters, Judy (Steven) Fuchsteiner of Onalaska, Cathy (Greg) Engen of Eau Claire, and Jo Ann “Josie” (Jeff) Schaller of Brownsville, Minn.; two sons, Thomas (Jane) Steidl of Madison, Wis., and Mark (Bonnie) Steidl of La Crosse; fourteen grandchildren, Amy Fuchsteiner, Ellyn (William) Groth, Christopher (Betsy) Fuchsteiner, Kevin (Heather) Engen, Amanda McQuade, Joseph Schaller (fiancé, Christa Lee), Casey Schaller, Jeffery Steidl, Tom (Jodi) Steidl, Angela Mason, Patrick (Merritt) Steidl, Colleen Steidl, Katie (Matt) Tredinnick, and Megan Steidl; nineteen great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild; and numerous special nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to his wife, Peachie, Joe was also preceded in death by a son, Steven, on April 2, 2011; a granddaughter, Angel Schaller; and his siblings, Mary (Cornelius) Dickman, Vincent, Tony and Herman Steidl, Margaret (Vernon) Kast, Magdalena “Lana” (Nate) London, and Catherine (Bernard) Steinhoff.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 25th, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1333 So. 13th St., La Crosse. Father Rick Roberts will officiate. Entombment will follow in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum in the Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 200 West Ave. So., La Crosse, and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church.
