James H. Snyder

James Harvey Snyder, 89, of La Crosse, passed away on Sunday June 19, 2016, at the Tomah Veteran’s Administration Medical Center.
He was born in Springfield, Mo., on August 19, 1926, to Silas M. and Margarette C. (Gaylon) Snyder. He married Clarabelle “Clara” Carrier in August of 1947, in La Crosse. Clara preceded him in death on January 28, 2013.
Jim served in the U.S. Army during World War II and continued his service to his country in the Army National Guard for many years. He served as President of the Enlisted Retirement Association for several years and was a long-time member of American Legion Post 417 of French Island, where he once served as Post Commander.
Following his discharge from the Army, Jim worked at Allis Chalmers in La Crosse for many years until the plant’s closing. He then worked at the Trane Company in La Crosse for 15 years until retiring. Following his retirement, Jim drove school bus for Laidlaw for several years.
In his free time, Jim loved to go camping; a passion he shared with his wife, Clara, for many years.
Jim is survived by his children, Margarette “Maggie” (Marlin) Peterson of La Crosse, Debra (Laurence) Shove of Holmen, and Jeffery Snyder of La Crosse; a daughter-in-law, Sally Snyder of Sparta, Wis.; grandchildren, Hope Virginia Jane (Lawless) Hansen of La Crosse, Laurence Lee and Christopher James Shove of Holmen, James Leslie Snyder of Baraboo, Wis., Audra Jean Snyder of La Crosse, Jason Snyder of La Crosse, Leslie and Jeffery Snyder of Missouri, and Joshua Allen Snyder of La Crosse; 17 great grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Worland of California. In addition to his wife, Clara, he was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, James; a daughter-in-law, Dawn Marie; a grandson, Steven Wayne Lawless; and a great-grandson, Dakota Snyder.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 23rd, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 200 West Ave. So., La Crosse. Pastor David Baldukas will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Devotion Mausoleum in Woodlawn Cemetery, La Crosse. Family and friends may call from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., on Wednesday at the funeral home and also from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday.
