Susan Lynn Ames

August 2, 1956 — May 7, 2016

There must have been a softball game in need of one more player on May 7th, 2016, when Susan Ames was called up from her earthly bullpen to take the field in heaven after a long battle with cancer.
Susan was born on August 2, 1956, to Dallas and Beverly (Harris) Ames. She is survived by her son, Michael (Ashley Lex); sisters, Salie (Gary) Schuweiler and Sandee Ames; brother, Larry (Bridgid) Ames; cousin, Kris (Tom) Holdorf; nephews and nieces; and her trusted four-legged companion, Theodore. Susan was preceded in death by her parents, and a cousin, Scott Harris.
Susan led a full life and lived it on her own terms. She was a sister, mother, aunt, friend, teacher, softball player, coach and mentor who found love and happiness in helping others. Recently, Susan was selected as a DFL Woman of Distinction by the DFL Women's Hall of Fame for her tireless efforts in the electoral process. “Vote, get involved, it does make a difference”, that's what Sue would say. Sue was passionate about being the change you wish to see in the world. One of her proudest accomplishments was working with the Bluff County Learning Center and watching her students grow. She was also very active in the Minnesota School Employees Association, and gained many friends in the organization. She was thankful for the support from the ISD 300 staff, the La Crescent girls' softball team, and her former co-workers from La Crosse Footwear.
A special thanks to Sue's special angels, Linda Gasper, Karla Duerwachter, and her future daughter-in-law, Ashley Lex, who provided amazing care for her during her final days. Sue’s family would also like to express their deepest gratitude for the care she received at Mayo Clinic, La Crosse and Rochester, as well as Gundersen Hospice.
A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. until noon, Saturday, May 14th, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 111 So. Oak St., La Crescent. Following the gathering, there will be a celebration of Sue’s life from noon until 3:00 p.m., at Schmitty’s Time-Out Tavern in La Crescent.
