Charles E. Baker, 87, of La Crosse/French Island, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. He was born on December 27, 1928 in La Crosse, WI to Rome and Doris (Miller) Baker of Dresbach, MN. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as a dredge operator both locally and nationally. Following that he worked as a brakeman for Burlington Northern Railroad for about 20 years before retiring. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing, boating, duck hunting and his dogs.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Arleen, children Jane (James) Harrison of La Crosse, Randy (Jane) Taylor of Wausau, WI, Chip (Jamie) Baker of La Crosse, Dell Baker of Hastings, MN and Kristine Baker of Tempe, AZ, 15 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Tim Taylor, one brother and two sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Bethel Lutheran Church, with a lunch to follow at the church. Pastor Duane Baardseth will officiate. Private family burial will take place prior to the service in the Oakland Cemetery, Dresbach, MN. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 11:30 AM until the time of service. The Schumacher – Kish Funeral & Cremation Services is assisting the family.
