William Joseph Shimshak, 84, of Dakota, Minn., died on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at the Gundersen Health System, La Crosse.
He was born on December 19, 1931, in La Crosse to Joseph and Mathilda (Thesing) Shimshak. He graduated from Aquinas High School in 1949 and served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Bill married Stella Bunk on January 9, 1954, in the chapel at the US Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Fla. He had worked at Trane Company for 39 years. Bill was an avid Green Bay Packer fan who also enjoyed bowling, trap shooting, duck, goose and deer hunting, trout fishing, and taking care of the mini apple orchard in his yard.
He is survived by his wife, Stella; six children, Gregory Shimshak, Jacob (Vicki) Shimshak, Paul (Carol) Shimshak, Timothy Shimshak, Karl Shimshak, and Angela Shimshak; five grandchildren, Lucas, Isaac, Kelly, Stephen and Devan; a great-grandson, Beni; a sister, Mary (Bill) Sharlow; a brother, James (Wanda) Shimshak; and a brother-in-law, Roger Beck.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Dakota. Rev. Gregory Havel will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services of La Crescent on Monday from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 AM until the time of services. A Prayer Service will be held Monday evening at 7:45 PM.
