Eugene G. Hohlfeld Sr., 85, of Stoddard, found peace while surrounded by loved ones as he passed away at home, Saturday January 30, 2016. Eugene was born the youngest of four children, on January 13, 1931 to George and Alma (Grosskopf) Hohlfeld. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Margaret Clements from 1950 until her death in 2001.
Eugene led a full and eventful life. He started a career of enjoyment in driving for Mathy Co. during the 1950s and then on to his true passion of working with his hands as a construction carpenter. After 30 years in construction he returned to the road where he drove truck for Metz Baking until his retirement in 1995.
Eugene could always be found enjoying the outdoors, whether he was making firewood, helping a neighbor, hunting, feeding his “livestock,” or tinkering in his garage. He loved gathering with friends and family for football games, pontoon rides on the Mississippi, Tuesday drawing at Rocky’s, family dinners or just for a night of sharing stories. He made new friends feel like old ones, and anyone who had the privilege to know him knows what a generous and bighearted man he was. He would always step up to help a friend or stranger even before being asked. “Grandpa Roy” will be remembered for his bright smile and incredible unwavering sense of humor. His life is truly one to be celebrated.
Eugene is a beloved father and survived by his children, DeBora Schultz of Oakland Park, FL, David Hohlfeld (Cindy) of Gilbert, AZ, Theresa (Eric) Anderson of Stoddard, Eugene Jr. (Diane) Hohlfeld of Holmen, Mike Hohlfeld of Madison and Melanie Moore of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews as well as ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He had a special place in his heart for each and every one of them. In addition to his wife Dorothy, he was preceded in death by a daughter Melinda in 1954, his parents George and Alma, a brother Donald Hohlfeld, and sisters Helen Miller and Harriet Halverson.
