Alice P. Kempton (nee: Constance), 94 of La Crosse passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at the Benedictine Manor. Alice was born in Superior, WI on October 9, 1921, the daughter of George and Blanche (Des Jardins) Constance.
On July 15, 1943 she was united in marriage to Dr. Leo V. Kempton in the rectory of Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior. They were totally devoted to each other until Leo passed away on March 19, 1993.
Alice’s father passed away when she was just three years old. She then went on to graduate at age 16 from Superior Central High School, becoming a very resourceful young lady. In La Crosse she owned and operated a dress shop. After retiring from the shop she became an extraordinary volunteer.
At Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, Alice helped to coordinate the Archdiocesan fund appeal. She also belonged to the Council of Catholic Women and was a lay minister, distributing communion at Mass. Until she was well into her eighties, Alice organized and served food at parish funerals. As a volunteer and member of Franciscan-Skemp auxiliary, Alice donated over 7,000 hours of service; for 22 years she was a member of the board of directors, serving as president, financial chair, by-laws chair, gift shop chair, geranium chair and as a member of the Tiny Tim committee, helping to raise thousands of dollars for the auxiliary fundraisers. Alice always worked tirelessly for every project she was involved in. Another volunteer has said “Alice has most certainly earned her place in Heaven.”
In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; a sister, Eva Rooney and a brother, George Constance, Sr.
Alice is survived by a brother, Lloyd Erickson of Solon Springs, WI; two brothers-in-law, Robert Kempton and Chet (Helen) Kempton; a sister-in-law, Barbara (Clyde) VanBuskirk; a niece, Marlys (John) Schuerman and many other nephews, nieces and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, 2006 Weston Street, La Crosse with Rev. Brian D. Konopa officiating. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Superior, WI on Thursday, January 7th. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of Mass.
We, her family, wish to thank all the staff at Benedictine Center for the great kindness and care given to Alice in her final years.
