Nancy (Freitag) Proksch was called to her eternal rest in her Savior’s arms on December 12, 2015 surrounded by her children and daughters’ in law. She was born on December 18, 1939 to Lorraine and Norman Freitag; the first of 6 children. Nancy and her sister Barbara, Jeff, Jack, Norman (Ike), and Barry attended Onalaska High School where she met the love of her life, Ernest Proksch. Nancy and Ernie were married in Onalaska on July 24, 1959 after she graduated from nursing school in Madison. They had three children; Scott (Karla) of La Crosse, Jon (Stephanie) of Coon Valley, and Cindy (John) Helfrich of Appleton. Nancy was blessed with five grandchildren – Chaille and Helen Proksch of Hollis, NH, Addison Proksch of Coon Valley, WI and Jaime and Tyler Helfrich of Appleton, WI – who provided her with much love and laughter.
Nancy attended Mt Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church for most of her life. She touched many lives with her quick wit and compassion; first as a LPN at Lutheran Hospital, Skemp Clinic, Gundersen Home Care, and finally her friends at Eagle Crest South. She loved practical jokes, especially with her friend Sherry. She had a special bond with her neighbor Danny A as she helped him for many years. She loved reading, gardening, walking, taking care of the neighborhood pets, and spending time at “Seventh Heaven”. She also loved being a “birder”.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Ernie, parents, step father William “Boober” Parizek, her mother in-law Helen Proksch, adopted in-laws Vi and Wes Proksch, her sister Barbara, her brothers Jack and Barry, and Amanda B who she took care of for many years.
In addition to her children and grandchildren, Nancy is survived by a daughter in law Kathy of Hollis, NH, her brothers Jeff and Ike, her sisters-in-law Grace, Debbie, Margaret, Marita, and Gloria with whom she shared many special times, her aunt Corrine (Babe), and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Mount Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church on Tuesday, December 15 at 12:00 Noon with Pastor Robert Wassermann officiating. A light lunch will follow services and interment will be in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of services. Memorials may be provided to the Onalaska Luther High School Scholarship fund, area Humane Societies, or to the Jack Freitag Youth Baseball Scholarship Fund.
The family would like to thank Dr. M Bassing, all the staff at Eagle Crest South for their loving care and support special thanks to Ashley, Kathie, Kendra, and Tami. You all are very much appreciated!
