Duane C. “Gordy” Gordon, 65, of La Crescent, died on Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse.
He was born in La Crosse on March 6, 1950, to Daniel L. and Florence M. (Novacek) Gordon, Sr. He attended La Crosse schools and was a 1968 graduate of La Crosse Central High School where he excelled at football, then continued his education at Huron University in Huron S. Dak., on a football scholarship. On July 14, 1984, Gordy married Sue Hinytzke at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman in La Crosse.
Gordy worked for La Crosse Footwear in La Crosse for 27 years until the plant’s closing. He then worked as a long haul truck driver for Ashley Furniture for a short time and then as an over-the-road truck driver for Bob Brink, Inc., of Winona until his illness forced him to retire; a job he truly loved and where he made many very special friends.
Gordy was known to his family and many friends as a kind and genuinely nice person. He was an avid fly fisherman who, over time, became very proficient at tying his own flies. He could be found every Sunday watching his beloved Green Bay Packers, his 2 special kitties sitting by “papa”. He loved spending time with family at the cabin on Third Lake in Trempealeau that he owned with his brothers, or fishing on Lake Onalaska.
He is survived by his wife, Sue; his mother, Florence Gordon of La Crosse; brothers, Daniel L. (Jeannie) Gordon, Jr. of La Crosse, David (Ellen) Gordon of La Crescent, and Douglas (Mary) Gordon of Holmen; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ann Fry of La Crosse, Jan (Frank) Schroeder of Henderson, Nev., and Jay (Renee) Hinytzke of Onalaska; many nieces and nephews and their families; and his “girls”, Fancy and Shadow.
He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel; a sister, Diane Anderson; and Sue’s parents, Pat and Dick Hinytzke.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 19th, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 111 So. Oak St., La Crescent. Rev. Scott Skogen will officiate. A reception will follow immediately at American Legion Post 595 in La Crescent. Family and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
