Hazen Lloyd Ames

Hazen L. Ames, 80, of West Salem, WI, passed away at his home on Sunday, June 21, 2015. He was born in Onalaska, WI, on May 26, 1935, to Lloyd and Edna (Stillwell) Ames. He married Edith Abbott on October 19, 1957, and she preceded him in death in 2005. Hazen proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1957 until 1963. He worked at Poellinger, Inc. for over 30 years. He enjoyed working with his hands as a mechanic, construction worker, and woodworker. Hazen will be remembered as a kind and generous person who would willingly help anyone and could fix anything. Two of his favorite pastimes were shopping at Menards and fishing. In his later years, Hazen enjoyed going to the symphony and traveling. Favorite trips included Greece, Turkey, and the Mediterranean Islands as well as excursions out West to visit family and U.S. national parks.
He is survived by his current wife, Agneta (Haakenson), whom he married in 2006, and children: Richard Ames, Lynne Peplinski, Laurie (Doug) Cragun, Lisa Dudley, Fred (Candy) Ames, Pete (Lisa) Ames, Jon (Char) Berns, Ruth Haakenson (Mark) Dregne, Ron (Djuana) Haakenson, and Jon (Kristen) Haakenson; 27 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He is further survived by two sisters, Margie and Dorothy, and one brother, Richard. In addition to his first wife, Edith, Hazen was preceded in death by three sisters, Carol, Mary, and Grace, and son-in-law, Danny Dudley.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2015, at Bethany Evangelical Free Church in La Crosse; Pastor Corey Sateren will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta. Friends may call on the family Thursday afternoon from 4 until 6 p.m. at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services La Crosse chapel; 200 West Ave. South, La Crosse. Visitation will also be held at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be used in Hazen’s memory.
