Marlyn “Dutch” H. Voss, 86, of La Crescent, passed away, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at the Gundersen Health System after a year-long battle with cancer.
Dutch was born in La Crosse on July 4, 1928, to Walter and Anna (Papenfuss) Voss. He was raised on the family farm near Nodine, Minn., and attended Winona area schools. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees and served in Saipan during World War II. One of the highlights of Dutch’s later years was to go on the Freedom Honor Flight in 2011. He was extremely proud to have served his country and deeply appreciated the opportunity to participate in this event.
On October 26, 1948, Dutch married the former Anna Marie “Annie” Humfeld in La Crescent. Annie preceded him in death on June 15, 2010.
Dutch worked at various area construction companies for several years until he and his sons started Voss & Sons Construction of La Crescent in 1975. He was a member of the La Crescent Chamber of Commerce, the La Crescent Rotary, Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post 595, as well as a long-time active member of Crucifixion Parish in La Crescent.
Dutch will be fondly remembered for his warm smile and great sense of humor, and his willingness to help others. His deep appreciation for the La Crescent community and willingness to help others was acknowledged when was honored by being named “La Crescent Man of the Year” in 2010.
He is survived by his three children, Greg (Julie) of La Crescent, Kay (Ken) Truax of La Crosse, and Allen (Rita) of La Crescent; six grandchildren, Jeremy (Inga) Voss, Heather Oldenburg, Valerie Voss, Andrea (Brian) Fukuda, Scott Voss, and Kyle Voss; one step-grandson, Dan (Suzanne) Truax; four great grandchildren, Vincent Voss, Violet Oldenburg, and Lily and Evan Fukuda; two step-great grandchildren, Noah and Nathan Truax; a brother-in-law, Dale Ebner; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his loving wife, Annie, Dutch was also preceded in death by brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Audree Voss; sister, Anahmarie Ebner; and Annie’s siblings and their spouses, Marion (Jerry) Jobe, Margaret (Elmer) Pille, and Donald (Kathleen) Humfeld.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 2nd, at the Church of the Crucifixion in La Crescent. Rev. Gregory Havel will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Crucifixion Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., on Sunday, at the church, where a prayer service will take place at 6:30 p.m., and again on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Crucifixion Parish or to the Hospice Program at Gundersen Health System.
