William J. Hyde

William J. Hyde, 90, of La Crosse, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2015 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. He was born on November 28, 1924 in Milwaukee, WI to William and Olga (Boettcher) Hyde. William earned a BS degree at Milwaukee State Teachers College and a MS and PhD degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He married Yvonne Hinds on August 16, 1950 in Milwaukee, WI. He taught at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH from 1946-1947, Washington State College in Pullman, WA from 1947-1950, Trinity University in San Antonio, TX from 1953-1956 and Wisconsin State College (UW-L) in La Crosse from 1956-1992.
Teaching English was his favorite occupation. Nineteenth century English Literature & History were his specialties. He read extensively and published articles, especially on British author Thomas Hardy, in various scholarly journals. Gardening was a close runner-up to teaching and he was pleased when he could give excess vegetables to friends and neighbors.
William is survived by his wife Yvonne.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the Schumacher – Kish Funeral & Cremation Services, 200 West Ave. S., La Crosse. Pastor Scott Skogen will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date in Forest Home Cemetery, Milwaukee, WI. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 1:00 PM until the time of service.
