Phyllis J. Fay, 89 of La Crescent, passed peacefully at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center on Wednesday, December 24, 2014. She was born in La Crosse on July 28, 1925 to George and Julia (Fillner) Miller.
Phyllis was an icon of La Crescent and a staple in the community. She enjoyed volunteering at her church and as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Phyllis was always a hard worker and turned labor into love wherever she was working. In her early years she was employed by Trane Company and later managed a local favorite candy store, Fanny Farmer. After marrying her husband in 1952, they turned their love of apples from a hobby to a full time business. They began their apple orchard from scratch and she later became known as the "apple lady" where faithful customers came from as far away as Chicago to visit her apple stand. After retiring from the apple business in 1979 she took on the full time job of taking care of her grandchildren.
Phyllis' other love was the sunshine and sandy beaches of Florida where she spent her winters surrounded by sunshine and the many friends she made in the Fort Myers Beach area. She also adored her great grandchildren and spent every moment she could with them. She became known as "GG" and was so proud to be a great-grandmother. Family was always her #1 priority.
Phyllis is survived by her two daughters Sherry (Steve) Ready of La Crescent, Tamara (Tim Quinn) Fay of Minneapolis, MN, two grandchildren Chad (Natalie) Ready of La Crescent, Heather Ready of Missoula, MT, two great grandchildren Erin and Cameron Ready and one brother Gerald (LaVon) Miller of Antigo, WI. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Hugh Fay, two sisters Beverly Hoeth and Lois Hammes.
Memorial services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent. Pastor Michael Woods will officiate. Burial will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, La Crescent. In keeping with Phyllis’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to Prince of Peace Lutheran church.
