Bernie was born in La Crosse on May 16, 1940, to Henry and Anna (Humfeld) Meier. He was a 1958 graduate of Aquinas High School. He married the former Jeanne Thompson and they later divorced.

Bernie was employed at Northern States Power in La Crosse for many years. He enjoyed eating at restaurants in La Crosse and never missed one of the summer or fall festivals in and around the La Crosse area.

He is survived by his three sons, John (Kirsten) Meier of Holmen, David (Cyndi) Meier of Roseville, Minn., and James (Johanna) Meier of Minnetonka, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Justin Meier, Allie (Caleb) Olson, Maxwell Meier, Holly Meier, Andrew Meier, Hannah Kvalhem, and Monica Meier; and two great grandchildren, Eli Meier and Jace Clements. Bernie is also survived by a sister, Arlene Martin of Onalaska; and nieces and nephews, Cathy (Paul) Olson, Michael (Beth) Martin, Steven “Charlie” (Dawn) Martin, and Ann (Kevin) Hatlestad, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife, Jeanne; a grandson, Ryan Meier; a niece, Debbie Woodliff; a brother-in-law, James Martin; and his faithful companions, his dogs, Sammy and Pepper.

In accordance with his wishes, Bernie’s body will be cremated. There will be a memorial gathering for family and friends held from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m., on Wednesday, December 17th, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services, 111 South Oak St., La Crescent. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the La Crescent Animal Rescue Shelter, 523 So. Chestnut St., La Crescent, MN 55947, or the Coulee Region Humane Society, 911 Critter Ct., Onalaska, WI 54650.
