Harold Elliott Niles, 93 passed away peacefully the afternoon of November 26, 2014. He is now rejoicing with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Harold was born December 18, 1920 in Mauston, WI to Milo Elliott and Sarah Lou Ella (Russell) Niles. He was baptized in 1938 in Mauston Baptist Church. After graduation from Mauston High School in 1938 he attended Juneau County Normal and taught in rural schools of Necedah and Elroy, WI.
Harold entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in September of 1942 and was stationed in the states for 18 months and in Italy for 18 months. In May of 1943 he married Bonnie Mae Barnes of New Lisbon, WI and she preceded him in death on May 19, 2000.
After his service during WWII, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He went on to teach agriculture in Rosendale, La Crosse and Wautoma, WI. After returning to La Crosse, Harold taught Special Education at Logan Junior High. He later earned his Master’s Degree in Education Administration. In 1983 he retired after 22 years of teaching. He came out of retirement to aid in the administration and teaching at Coulee Region Christian School in 1988-1989.
Harold was active in the work at Charles Street Church of Christ in North La Crosse and later at Onalaska Church of Christ where he served as an Elder for many years. He also was actively involved as treasurer and board member of the Gospel Broadcasting Mission.
In addition to his wife, Bonnie Mae (Barnes) of La Crosse he was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Niles of Mauston, WI; close cousin Charles Curtis of Waupaca, WI; and son-in-law Don Salisbury of Eagan, MN. He is survived by his two daughters; Cheri (Gary) Blomquist of Sparks, NV and Nana Lou Salisbury of Eagan, MN; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He will be missed by all that knew him.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 13th at the Onalaska Church of Christ, 1415 Well Street, Onalaska. Friends and family may call at the church on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services. Private family entombment will held at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to Gospel Broadcasting Mission, www.gospelbroadcastingmission.org. Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services of La Crosse is assisting the family.
