Joye Wilma Burand passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2014, at the age of 98.
She was born in Galesville, Wis., on August 2, 1916, the first of three children born to William and Verna (Harris) Severson. She graduated from Central High School in La Crosse and went to Beauty School in Milwaukee.
Joye married Elmer E. Burand and they moved to Waukegan, Ill., for his photo engraving job. They lived there until his death on September 12, 1972. Joye then moved to La Crescent to finish what was to be their retirement home. She was a homemaker and spent many hours volunteering at the La Crosse Nutrition Center as a driver, R.S.V. P., Lutheran Hospital, as a tour guide for AARP, and Come for Supper at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in La Crosse. Joye was a longtime member of the Variety Singers. She enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, puzzles, and was an excellent seamstress.
Joye is survived by three children and their families: a daughter, Sharon (Arroyo), and her husband, Spencer Peters, of Holmen, and Sharon’s children and families, Tamara (Mervyn) Elliott of Battle Creek, Mich., and their children, Christian and Lila; Greg (Sue) Arroyo of La Crosse, and their children, Jake, Caitlyn, and Eric; Brad (Laura) Arroyo of Lakemoor, Ill., and their children, Tory, Sarah, and Emily; Kym (Bill) Ehlebracht of Gurnee, Ill., and their daughter, Alexis; Tim Arroyo of Holmen and his children, Jay, Leila, and Alexander; and Erin (Jayson) Parker of Wauwatosa, Wis., and their children, Dylan, Tyler, and Cayden; a son, Keith Burand, and his wife, Beverly, of La Crescent, and Keith’s children and families, Michael (Claire) Burand of Corvallis, Oregon, and Elizabeth (Johnny) Micheel of Houston, Minn., and their daughter, Emma; and a son, Denis Burand, and his wife, Cathy, of Excelsior, Minn., and their children, Rebecca (Jason) Lahr and Rachel Burand. Joye is further survived by five great, great grandchildren; a brother, Richard Schultz; a sister-in-law, Willa Severson; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Elmer, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Peterson; and a brother, Loyal Severson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, December 4th, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 612 Division St., La Crosse. Rev. Mark Jolivette will officiate. A luncheon will be served after the service with burial following in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
