Curtis George Thumann, age 67, died at the House of the Dove hospice care facility in Marshfield, WI on Monday October 6th 2014. He was baptized at St. John Church, Red Wing, MN on July 27, 1947 and confirmed at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church, Zumbrota, MN on May 21, 1961.
Curtis was born on June 3rd 1947, to Bernard and Verneda (Kruse) Thumann. He attended school in Zumbrota, MN and graduated High School in 1965. Curtis served in the USAF from 1966 to 1970 during which he was stationed in both Korea and Vietnam as a Sergeant First Class Air Freight Specialist. After his return from Korea and before he was stationed in Vietnam he met his wife Margaret (Friebus) at a church picnic in Topeka KS while stationed at Forbes AFB. Curtis and Margaret corresponded during his subsequent deployment to Vietnam and were married one month after his return, on November29, 1969 in Stockton KS.
Curtis and Margaret started their life together in Oklahoma City OK where Curtis was stationed at Tinker Air Force Base. Soon after they moved to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area where they had their first son, Daniel. In Minneapolis Curtis worked for Western Airlines as a baggage handler while attending trade school for Diesel Mechanics. In 1972 the family of three moved to New Ulm, MN where Curtis started driving truck for Kraft Foods. Soon after settling in New Ulm the family expanded with the addition of their second son Jon. In 1976 the Thumanns moved to Grand Island Nebraska where Curtis drove truck for Overhead Door and soon became the father of a third boy, David who was born in 1978.
In 1979 the family moved to Onalaska, WI where Curtis continued his career as a truck driver for Gateway/Flemming and eventually for himself as the owner of Creative Group Transportation, LLC. Curtis never really retired, and was always reading, tinkering, and dreaming up new ways to spend his time. Curtis was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include Curtis's wife Margaret , his three sons Daniel (Trisha) of Marshfield, Jon (Kari) of Chandler AZ, David (Megan) of Neenah; grand children Dustin, Courtney, Grace, Samuel, Henry, Liam, and Caleb. Curtis is survived by two brothers Robert (Geraldine) Thumann and Dewain (Sharon) Thumann as well as his Uncle Roy Thumann and mother-in-law Irene Friebus. Curtis is also survived four brothers' and sisters' in law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at 3:00 PM at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Onalaska. Pastor William Bader will officiate. Burial will be held on Monday, October 13 at 2:00 PM in the Onalaska City Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Sunday from 1:00 PM until the time of services. In Lieu of flowers memorials will be accepted to the House of the Dove and Luther High School.
