Irene M. Thompson, 81 of La Crescent, MN and formerly of Winona, MN passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. She was born in Winona on June 7, 1933 to Emil and Florence (Ziemer) Roemer. On January 8, 1955 she married Orlin Thompson in Winona and he preceded her in death on April 24, 1991. Irene retired from Gundersen Lutheran Clinic in 2005. She was active and involved in many things including the Red Hat Club, the Gittens Leidel American Legion Post 595 and Legion Ladies Auxillary she had also volunteered for the American Red Cross. She loved music, dancing, travelling and attending her grandchildren’s many events. Though she fought courageously through many health issues, she still enjoyed life to the fullest, teaching her children and grandchildren to do the same.
She is survived by her six children; Bonnie LoPiano of La Crescent, Gary (Tomisa) Thompson of Ettrick, WI, Rick (Cathy) Thompson of La Crescent, Lori Minegar of La Crescent, David Thompson of Dakota, MN, Kathy (Travis) Zenke of Dakota, eighteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one sister Anita Calhoun of Winona and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by one grandson Joshua, two brothers Marlin and Charles, her niece Naomi Lintelman and her special friend Richard Benson.
Funeral services will be held at 11am on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Prince Of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent. Pastor Mike Woods will officiate. Burial will follow in the Toledo Cemetery, La Crescent. Friends may call on the family Tuesday evening from 4 until 7 pm at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services La Crescent chapel; 111 South Oak St. Visitation will also be held Wednesday morning at the church from 10am until the time of services.
