Dallas Dalane Doss

August 28, 1924 — September 1, 2014

Dallas Dalane Doss, 90, of La Crescent, passed away due to natural causes on Monday, September 1, 2014, at the Clara House of La Crescent.

He was born in White, S. Dak., on August 28, 1924, to Christian and Mable (Friday) Doss. On July 11, 1946, he married Elnora Marzinske, and they were married for 54 years until her death on June 1, 2000. Dallas then married Mary J. “Jan” Ott on November 18, 2006. Jan also preceded Dallas in death on June 14, 2010.

Dallas enlisted in the U. S. Navy as a 17 year old and served in the South Pacific during World War II. Following his discharge from the Navy, he farmed in rural Janesville, Minn., for about ten years before moving to North Mankato, Minn. He attended vocational school there and then started his career as an electrician until his retirement in 1994 at the age of 70. Dallas was a 55 year member of the IBEW and was active in his union local for many years.

Like his father who was a carpenter, Dallas was also an accomplished woodworker. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed playing cards. Following his retirement, he and Elnora also enjoyed traveling around the country together.

Faith was an important part of Dallas’ life. He was a member of St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church in North Mankato for many years and assisted in the church’s building and expansion project. In 1996, he and Elnora moved to Stoddard, Wis., where he served on the Board of Elders at St. Matthew’s Ev. Lutheran Church. After he married Jan, Dallas moved to La Crescent and became a member of First Ev. Lutheran Church where he participated in a Bible study group.

Dallas is survived by two daughters, Kristine (Jerry) Shepard of Stoddard, Wis., and Wanda (Fred) Garcia of Amarillo, Texas; ten grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren; a sister, Lois Jewison of Janesville, Minn.; a brother, Darrell (Cheryl) Doss, of the Twin Cities area; in-laws, Wallace (Delores) Stelter of North Mankato, Pamela Doss of Albert Lea, Minn., Harvey Anderson of Eagle Lake, Minn., Loretta Marzinske of Abbottsford, Wis., and Betty Doss of Washington state; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to Elnora and Jan, Dallas was also preceded in death by his siblings, Nellie Montis, Orville Doss, Edward Doss, Alan Doss, Doris Stelter, Vernon Doss, and Lorraine Anderson.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 5th, at First Ev. Lutheran Church in La Crescent. Pastor Chris Christenson will officiate. Burial and committal services, with military honors, will take place at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 6th, at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Alma City, Minn., with Pastor Del Begalka officiating. Family and friends may call at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
