Dorothy Ann Wehrs, 72, of West Salem died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at her home in West Salem, with her husband of 53 years, Merlin, at her side.
Dorothy was born Jan. 16, 1942, in Sparta, Wis., to John and Florence (Jones) Raymer. She attended Walker School in rural West Salem and graduated with the West Salem High School class of 1959.
After attending La Crosse Vocational School, now Western Technical College, she worked at Trane Co. in La Crosse. On June 10, 1961, she married Merlin Wehrs at West Salem Presbyterian Church.
Dorothy raised three sons and farmed with Merlin in Pleasant Valley. She was the West Salem School District's bookkeeper before moving on to the Bangor School District, where she kept the books from 1982 to 2008. She greatly enjoyed working with teachers, administrators and colleagues at both schools.
She enjoyed bowling and found golf frustrating. She was an excellent cook and host, a marvelous seamstress, and an expert gardener and canner.
Dorothy was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Barre Mills, along with its Ladies Aid and choir. She was a faithful volunteer at Good Steward resale store in La Crosse. She was an excellent helper in Merlin's work as a church treasurer and West Salem Fire Protection District treasurer.
She is survived by her husband, Merlin; three sons, Marc (Kristine Sandy) Wehrs, Karl (Kathy) Wehrs and Paul (Ellen) Wehrs; nine grandchildren, Avery, Henry, Augustus, Helena and Lilith Wehrs, Emily Hemker, Nick Bennett, and John and Anna Wehrs; three brothers, Sydney (Phyllis), Robert (Bonnie) and Arlyn (Daisy) Raymer; and three sisters, Rosemary (Jim) Zeasman, Janet (John) Rusch and Nancy (Dale) Mortimer; a special sister-in-law, Janice; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John; and a sister, Joyce (Norman) Duffrin.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 12 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Barre Mills. The Rev. Andrew Schultz will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, along with a light lunch after the graveside service. Visitation will be at the church from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Monday and 10:00 a.m. until services Tuesday.
Memorials may be directed to the St. John’s Building Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Dorothy greatly appreciated the calls, cards and visits she received these past several months.
