Harriet Margaret Nicol, 85, of La Crosse, died on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at the Mayo Clinic Health System of La Crosse.
She was born in La Crosse on August 21, 1928, to Joseph and Margaret (Antony) Kaiser. She married Robert Johnson in La Crosse and they later divorced. She then married Charles J. Nicol on July 10, 1973, in La Crosse. Charlie preceded Harriet in death on October 18, 2013.
Harriet worked for many years at Gateway Products in La Crosse until the company’s closing. She then worked in the kitchen at the Diocesan Center for many years, where she was affectionately known as the “Soup Queen”, until she retired when she was in her late 70’s.
Harriet was a wonderful baker and was best known for her angel food cakes. On most summer days, you could find her on the front porch of her home just watching the people and cars go by. She enjoyed feeding the birds and tending to her flowers. She also loved to go dancing, was an accomplished bowler, was very fond of jelly beans, and was an avid Brewers and Packers fan.
Harriet is survived by two daughters, Cindy Folcey (friend, Greg Juan) and Connie (Bob) Rutz, both of La Crosse; six grandchildren, Jan (Renee) Weber, Thad Gehrke, Robbie Neas, Jason Folcey, Kim (Eric) Walker, and Michael Rutz; and four great grandchildren, Parker Gehrke, and Kailey, Elijah and Easton Walker. She is also survived by five sisters, Alice Silha of St. Joseph Ridge, Loretta Servais of West Salem, Rose (LaVern) Schaller of Bangor, Mary Ann Hilby of Waterloo, Iowa, and Nancy Kaiser of La Crosse; sister-in-law, Eunice Kaiser of Belvidere, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Harriet was preceded in death by her husbands; a daughter, Vicki Walters; a grandson, Kurt Walters; one sister, Bernice Mashak; and three brothers, Cletus, Richard and Jerry Kaiser.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 2nd, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman. Msgr. Charles Stoetzel will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of mass.
