Bill was born July 6, 1943, in Sheboygan, Wis. to Bernard Mickey Butler and Lorraine (Salter) Butler. He married his wife, Wendy (Masarik) Butler on June 29, 1968, in Plymouth, Wis.

Bill graduated from UW-Madison, spent his career with the Social Security Administration, and retired in 2006. He coached sports teams for all three of his children and was involved in Shelby Youth Baseball and the Stars of Tomorrow tournaments for many years. Bill was an avid fan of UW Sports and was involved in organizing a local UW Alumni Chapter. He enjoyed Badger Football and was a season ticket holder for many years. He will be remembered for leading an active life with special interests in gardening and golf, and was a member and Vice-President of the Friends of the La Crosse Public Library.

Bill is survived by his wife, Wendy; his three children Michael, Shannon (David) Taylor, and Ted (Andrea); his grandchildren, Lauren, Emily, Kellen, and Ainsley; and his sisters, Pat and Elisabeth. He was preceded in death by both parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Douglas Robertson at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 9th, at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2006 Weston St., La Crosse. Burial will take place at a later date. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Ave. So., La Crosse, on Sunday from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m., and at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The Friends of the La Crosse Public Library or the Salvation Army.
