He was born in Baltrusheiten (Balten), East Prussia, on May 5, 1928, to Erich and Gertrud (Janz) Artschwager. On May 31, 1957, he married Lorraine M. Inglett in Waukon, Iowa. She preceded him in death on October 31, 2011.

Klaus graduated from an Agricultural College in Timmosphe, Germany, in 1950. He came to the United States in 1952 as a displaced person and was sponsored by the Norbert Logging family of West Salem. He entered the U.S. Army and gained his U.S. citizenship in 1954 while stationed in Germany. Following his active duty, he spent 26 years serving in the U.S. Army Reserve until he retired in 1988. He was a life member of V.F.W. Post 1530 of La Crosse.

After working on the Logging family farm, Klaus worked at Leider Lumber and Horman Builders before starting his own construction business. Klaus was known for his craftsmanship both as a carpenter and cabinetmaker. In his free time, he enjoyed carving, building grandfather clocks, and making wooden gifts for friends and family. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. He also enjoyed singing as a member of the La Crosse Oktoberfest Singers. He was a long-time member of Grace Ev. Lutheran Church in La Crosse.

Klaus is survived by his children and grandchildren, Eric (Mary) Artschwager of Stoddard, and their children, Jamie (Josh) Schedler of Milwaukee and Brian Artschwager of Stoddard, Susan (Cliff) Tomlin of Mauston, Wis., and their children, Kelly Chase and Chris Quinnell both of Friendship, Wis., and Phil and Gabe Tomlin both of Mauston; and a grandchild from his son, David, Karen (Jim) Schallow of La Crosse; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He is further survived by a daughter-in-law, Barb Artschwager of La Crosse; and two sisters, Dora and Krystal, who reside in Germany. The family also wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Klaus very dear friends, John and Betty Brewer. In addition to his wife, Lorraine, Klaus was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, David; a grandson, Karl Artschwager; and three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 13th, at 11:00 a.m., at Grace Ev. Lutheran Church in La Crosse. Rev. Jonathan Rimmert will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will take place in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
