George F Stemper

Hokah, MN

George F. Stemper, 74 of Hokah, MN died suddenly on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at the Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. He was born on July 31, 1937 in La Crosse to George E. and Alice (Fogel) Stemper and graduated from St. Peters High School in Hokah. He then worked on the family farm and hauled can milk until serving in the Army Reserves with six month active duty at Ft. Leonardwood, MO. Following his return to Hokah he returned to hauling milk and farming the Ben Spagel farmstead which he purchased in 1970 and has been farming since.

George married Joan Lueben and she died as a result of an automobile accident in 1973 along with their son, Matt. On May 29, 1976 he married Linda Miller at St. Peters Catholic Church in Hokah. He very much loved spending time with his daughters and grandkids. George also enjoyed card games, country music and the outdoors.

In addition to his wife Linda, he is survived by two daughters; Emily (Jeromy) Johnson of Hokah and Grace Stemper of Winona; three grandchildren, Jena and Jade Johnson and Isaac Stemper; his mother, Alice Stemper of Onalaska; his brothers and sisters; Joe Stemper of Hokah, MaryAnn Stemper of Prairie du Chien, WI, Al (Judy) Stemper of Onalaska, Frank (Renea) Stemper of Becker, MN and Carol Gautsch of Holmen, along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to his first wife Joan and son Matt he was preceded in death by his father.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 16th at St. Peters Catholic Church in Hokah with Rev. Joseph Pete officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Hokah. Friends and family may call on Sunday from 4-8 P.M. at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent where a prayer service will be held at 7:45 P.M. and again at the church on Monday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services.
