Carol Jean Franzen - Carol Jean (Schambow) Franzen, found peace on July 16, 2012, after a long courageous fight against cancer.
She was born on December 15, 1947, in Dodgeville, Wis., to Arthur and Grace (Rowe) Schambow, and was a 1966 graduate of Fennimore High School. She worked as a secretary for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in Madison and then in the Geography Department as well as the Physical Plant at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse before retiring.
Carol is survived by three children, Jim Burns of Ellendale, Del., Jeff Franzen of Delaware, and Michelle Franzen of Baraboo; two grandchildren, Dylan Burns and Coleton Franzen; her siblings, Joanne (Larry) Wolenec of Montfort, Wis., Betty (Ken) Zitka of Troy, Ill., Paul (Pam) Schambow of Wausaukee, Wis., Mary (Mike) Prem of Franklin, Wis., Roberta (Bob) Stanley of Brookfield, Wis., and Linda Schambow of Madison; a brother-in-law, Milo Zoha of Montfort, WI; numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews; her soul mate, Maynard Gardner of La Crosse; and her special cats, Babs and Scamper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Burns, in 1968; her mother in 1984; her father in 1992; and her sister, Elsie Zoha, in 2009.
Carol will be remembered for her love of family, getting together and playing cards. Carol also enjoyed planning trips with Maynard and her family. She will also be remembered for her very generous and compassionate spirit, and will be missed very much by those close to her.
The family wishes to thank the Hospice program at Mayo Clinic Health System in Sparta, Wis. for their wonderful care in her final days.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is assisting the family with arrangements.
