Robert Thompson, 94, of La Crosse died Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at Bethany Riverside. He was born in Cache, Oklahoma on May 7, 1918 to Eugene and Frankie (Meeks) Thompson. Robert enlisted in the army in 1940 at the age of 22. During his training, he was stationed at Fort McCoy. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Beverly Jessie. Robert served in WWII with the 2thndth Infantry Division at Normandy Beach and also at the battle in the Ardennes Forest on the Germany/Belgium border. He was awarded a purple heart for his service. On August 2, 1945, he married Beverly. They were married for 54 years before she preceded him in death on August 11, 1999. Robert owned and operated Ligneel Concrete Products until his retirement in 1983. He spent his free time hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. He especially enjoyed the time spent with family.

Robert is survived by two sons, Robert G. (Elizabeth) Thompson of La Crosse, David J. (Nancy) Thompson of Onalaska; a daughter, Margaret Peg J. (Thomas) Myhre of Onalaska; five grandchildren, Kelly and Kendra Thompson, Erik (Shelly), Kevin (Laura), and Brett Myhre; three great grandchildren, Paige, Owen, and Addyson Myhre. He is also survived by four sisters, Marie Capps, Doris Mae Covey, Dollie Jenkins, and Della (Sam) Roberts; and a sister-in-law Evonne Ligneel. He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Gustav Ligneel, three brothers; Roy, Frank and Leonard Thompson, and five sisters; Myrtle, Zelda, Mary Jane, Martha, and Frances.

Robert was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend and will be missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 15th at 10:30 a.m at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home in La Crosse with Reverend Bruce Iverson officiating. Entombment with military honors will follow at the Chapel of Devotion Mausoleum, Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse from 9 a.m. Saturday until the time of the services. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at Bethany Riverside for their compassionate care over the last two years.
