On August 6, l955, Mary was married to Douglas Meyer. They farmed in Thompson Valley near Hokah, MN, for 36 years, and had five children. They retired to La Crescent in 1991. Mary adored Christmas time. As her son Charlies birthday was on December 23thrdth, Christmas at the Meyers began on December 24th, with the decorating of the house and the trimming of the tree. Mary made her family happy with lots of cookies and lots of presents (which she loved shopping for). Marys greatest love was being Grandma. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, bird watching, and being with her two beagles Fred and Sparky. She had a special bond with her son-in law- Dudley. They greatly enjoyed each others company, playing cards, telling jokes and just hanging out.
Mary is survived by her husband Douglas of 57 years, two daughters; Jane (Dudley) Voves of La Crescent, MN and Amy Meyer of La Crosse, WI., three sons; Douglas (Stephanie) Meyer Jr. of Friendswood, TX, Daniel of Winona, MN. and Charles (Susan) of Cochrane, WI, six precious grandchildren; Ryan, Reece and Madison Meyer, Gregory Voves, Erika and Steven Meyer, step-granddaughters Krista and Amanda Horst and step-great grandson Jon, brothers, Howard (Mary) Meyer and Gordon (Carolyn) Meyer and her many wonderful cousins, whom she enjoyed so much. She was preceded in death by her parents and her Grandmother Christie, who was like a sister to her, her mother-in-law Gladys, who taught her how to bake bread and pie, and her sisters-in-law and their husbands, Dorothy and Oren Pengra and Barbara and Joseph Shockley.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, September 24, 2012 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent. Pastors Barbara Kopperud and Michael Woods will officiate. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Hokah. Friends may call on the family Monday morning from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be used in Marys memory.
A special thank you to Dr. John Udell, Dr. Emily Winslow at the UW Madison Medical Center, and all those involved with the Hospice Program at Gundersen Lutheran, especially Chaplain Alan Vrieze for his wonderful care and understanding.
