Palmer Johnson Jr., 87, of La Crosse died on Saturday, November 17, 2012. He was born on October 19, 1925 in Viroqua, WI to Palmer and Selma (Fortney) Johnson, Sr.
Palmer was a WWII veteran and after an honorable discharge from the US Army, he joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard and retired after 37 years as Command Sgt. Major.
Palmer served on the Trane Employees Federal Credit Union Board of Directors. He also volunteered at Gundersen Lutheran for 20 years and drove cars for many local dealerships.
He is survived by Donna, his wife of 63 years, his three daughters, Diane (Ken) Pickett, Barbara (Dave) Bruce and Peggy (Mark) Benson, seven grandchildren, Bryann (Jenny) Pickett, Amy (Chuck) Royston, Andrew Benson, Tony (Jesse) Benson, Jordan (Michelle) Benson, Joe Benson and Erik Benson, eight great-grandchildren, and his sister, Sara Burt of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Palmer and Selma Johnson and his brother, Harlan Johnson.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, 400 West Avenue So., La Crosse. Pastor Tom Meyer will officiate. Entombment with military honors will follow in the Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Freedom Honor Flight, PO Box 505, La Crosse, WI 54602-0505.
