Ann Marie Zanter

She was born in La Crosse on March 31, 1931, to Peter and Betty (Herrick) Mettlach and was raised in Arcadia, Wis. She graduated from Arcadia High School and received her nursing degree from the St. Francis School of Nursing. On November 26, 1955, she married John F. Zanter at Holy Trinity parish in La Crosse. She had been a long-time active member of the Cathedral parish where she served as a Eucharistic minister for many years. Ann had worked in the IV Therapy Department at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center for over 30 years before retiring.

In her free time, Ann enjoyed bowling, playing Bridge, and spending time at the family cottage on Shore Acres. She was an avid follower of the Packers, Cubs, and Badgers, and was also a fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Duke Blue Devils. She also loved to travel and had an extensive collection of beer steins that she had acquired over the years.

Ann is survived by her husband, John; her children, Diane M. (Carl Jannett) Zanter of St. Paul, Minn., John P. Zanter of La Crosse, Michael J. Zanter of Whitehall, Wis., Nancy A. (Mark) Wannemuehler of Holmen, Karen J. Zanter of Eden Prairie, Minn., Daniel J. (Linda) Zanter of La Crosse, Thomas E. Zanter (Marci Watson) of La Crosse, and Steven F. (Vicki) Zanter of Onalaska; and her twelve grandchildren. She is further survived by four brothers, Jack Mettlach of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Richard (Nancy) Mettlach of Crystal Falls, Mich., Tom (Kay) Mettlach of Oshkosh, Wis., and Lenny (Judy) Mettlach of Milwaukee, Wis.; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Kabat of Madison, Wis., Beverly Giovenazzo of East Moline, Ill., and Mary Jane (Richard) Sheehan of Rockford, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Adam Zanter; and a daughter-in-law, Tammy Zanter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 18th, at 10:30 a.m., at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman, 530 Main St., La Crosse. Msgr. Charles Stoetzel will officiate. Entombment will take place in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum in the Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends may call at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services-La Crosse Chapel, located at 200 West Ave. So., on Wednesday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., where a rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m., and at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be directed to Aquinas High School or the Cathedral parish.
