He was born in Waterloo, Iowa on December 1, 1937, to Sylvester and Martha (Fabian) Ames. On November 12, 1966, he married Lynette A. (Symmonds) Lund. She preceded Dick in death on July 13, 1992.
Dick served with the Navy Seabees and the U.S. Air Force, and then spent the remainder of his military career, which spanned more than 30 years, with the U.S. Army. He was a member of Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post 595 of La Crescent.
Survivors include his son, Rick Ames of La Crescent; step-children, Rita of Berkley, Cal., Linda (Terry) Vinson of Sparta, Wis., and Donald Lund of La Crosse; and two step grandsons, Eric and Brian Brueggeman. Dick is further survived by a brother, Ron (Jenny) Ames of Jefferson City, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Onada Ames of Fort Smith, Ark.; and three nephews, Douglas Lee Ames, Andy Ames, and JJ Ames. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Diggens; and a brother, Jack Ames.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 7th, at 1:00 p.m., at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services of La Crescent, located at 111 So. Oak St. Rev. Gregory Havel will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Crucifixion Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from noon until the time of service.
