Donald L Torgerud

Donald L. Torg Torgerud, 84, of La Crosse, died at his home on Thursday, June 13, 2013.

He was born in La Crosse on February 8, 1929, to Roy and Gladys (Thompson) Torgerud. He married the former, Janice Bjorkman on April 17, 1948. She preceded him in death on November 26, 1983.

Don was well-respected and well-liked by his peers and his many friends. He and Janice were known for their annual Christmas morning Tom & Jerry party, where Santa Claus would make an appearance to the delight of the grandchildren. Don began his working career at the age of 17 at Gateway Products. Through hard work and love of his job, he advanced to become Vice President of the plant until its closing. He then continued his career at Northern Engraving until his retirement in 1987. In his free time, he loved fishing and hunting, especially with his brother-in-law and good friend, Fran Murphy. He was awarded a lifetime honorary membership to the Roy L Vingers American Legion Post 52, La Crosse, WI.

Don is survived by two daughters, Barbara Deml (Ralph Johnson) of Hatfield, Wis., and Kathleen (Dave) Schaller of Pensacola, Fla.; five grandchildren, Nicole (Jeff) OGara of Decorah, Iowa, Richard (Leah) Deml, III, of West Allis, Wis., Michael Deml (fianc, Danielle Schwemlein) of La Crosse, Nathan (Katie) Jenks of Melrose, and Nicholas (Heidi) Jenks of La Crosse; five great grandchildren, Kailyn, Kara, Kellen, Charlie, and Kylie; one brother, Billy K. (Pat) Torgerud; three sisters-in-law, Nira Torgerud, Carole Torgerud, and Jean Torgerud; one brother-in-law, Robert DeBruin; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Don was also preceded in death by his mother and father, a sister, Dorothy DeBruin; and five brothers, Robert, Le Roy, Richard, Jerry, and David.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 18th, at 1:00 p.m., at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services - La Crosse Chapel, located at 200 West Ave. So. Rev. Tom Meyer will officiate. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from noon until the time of service.
