Bill was born in La Crosse on November 11, 1948 to William G. and Lois E. (Bratberg) Dawes. He grew up in La Crescent, graduating from La Crescent High School. Bill joined the Navy and was a medic assigned to the Marines during the Vietnam era.
After many years in the service, Bill traveled around the country holding a variety of jobs, such as a paramedic in California, a cross country truck driver, a milk hauler in central Wisconsin, an oil rig worker and was a guard at a commercial bull frog pond in Texas to help out a friend.
Bill then returned to the La Crosse area and went back to school, receiving an associate degree in the medical field.
Bills interests were many, with fishing, swimming and being out on the water his favorites. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycles.
Bill is survived by his mother, Lois, his sisters; Vicki (Alan) Schroeder of La Crescent, MN and their children; Jake Kibler and JoAnne Delaney of La Crescent, MN, Karisa Doucet of Brownsville, MN and her children Ivy and Caden, Becky (Doug) Danielsen of Rosemont, MN and their children Nora and William, his brother; Geoff (Jeanne) Dawes of La Crescent, MN and their children; Sara (Blake) Peters of La Crosse, WI and Neal Dawes of Denver, CO and Lisa Dawes of Ventura CA.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, William G. and his brother-in-law, Don Kibler.
According to Bills wishes, he will be cremated. A private graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 20 at Prospect Hill Cemetery in La Crescent, MN with Pastor Greg Nelson officiating.
Memorials may be given to Gundersen Medical Foundation for Cancer Research or a charity of your choice.
Bills family would like to thank all the staff involved at Gundersen Health System for their excellent and supporting care during these many months of his last illness.
