Rea Margelle Schubert, 77, of La Crosse, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at her home with her husband and family at her bedside. She was born on May 22, 1936 in La Crosse to Roy and Olive (Fossen) Stark. She graduated from La Crosse Central High School in 1954 and from the Minneapolis General Hospital School of Nursing in 1957. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Milton College in 1981. Rea specialized in Psychiatric Nursing and had been employed at St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse, St. Marys Hospital in Madison, WI and Worcester Memorial Hospital in Worcester, MA. She married Franz Schubert on January 18, 1958 in La Crosse. They enjoyed traveling and exploring the beauty of new places, especially throughout New England while in Massachusetts and during a number of relaxed times in Hawaii after their return to La Crosse in 1997. Rea was a member of the AAUW and First Congregational United Church of Christ in La Crosse. She volunteered at the public library and the Hunger Task Force. Rea loved spending time with family and friends, and as an only child held her visits with aunts, uncles, and cousins very dear to her heart. She appreciated the beauty of nature and enjoyed scenic drives and walks through gardens. Rea will be remembered most for her extreme love of life and of her husband, family and friends, and for her deep concern and kindness towards all people.
She is survived by her husband Franz, two sons, Pete (Joan) Schubert of Baton Rouge, LA and Kurt (Kathy) Schubert of Dane, WI, a daughter Jenny (Jon) Podevels of Abbortsford, WI, eight grandchildren, Adam Schubert, Matt Schubert, Brynn (Matt) Smith, Collin Schubert, Clayton Schubert, Jory Podevels, Nikki Podevels, and Payton Podevels, and two great-granddaughters, Reese Smith and Riley Podevels. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 10th at 11:00 AM at First Congregational UCC Church with Pastor Bill Hoglund officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held at the church on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of services. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Congregational Church or Gundersen Lutheran Palliative Care or Hospice Care.
Rea was so thankful for the loving care given her by the people of Gundersen Lutheran Palliative and Hospice Care, and for the love, comfort, and bedside prayers by the wonderful people of First Congregational Church.
