James J. Howarth, 91 of La Crescent, MN, passed away on Saturday, August 17th at the Golden Living Care Center in La Crescent. He was born in Dubuque, IA, on December 6, 1921 to James and Elizabeth (Radtke) Howarth. He married Jeanne L. Haffele in Darlington, WI, on May 28, 1944 and she preceded him in death on December 29, 2010.
Jim had proudly served his country as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War Two. He will be remembered by many driving his big red Phillips 66 oil truck on his bulk delivery routes throughout the area. He always had a special place in his heart for children and would often hand out Tootsie Pops from the cab of his truck. Later, Jim owned and operated La Crescent Oil for several years.
Faith and family were very important to Jim. He is survived by his three children, Karen (Bruce) Czarnetzki of Davenport, IA, James (Elaine) Howarth of La Crescent, Linda (Bill) Bangtson of La Crescent, six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, August 23, 2013 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Crescent. Pastor Michael G. Sheppard will officiate. Entombment will be in the Chapel Of Devotion Mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call on the family Friday morning at the church from 9:00 A.M. until the time of services. Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services La Crescent chapel is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be used in Jims memory.
