Omer C Schleich

Omer C. Schleich - Omer C. Schleich, 91, of Hokah, MN, died on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the Mayo Clinic Health System in LaCrosse.

Omer was born on September 2, 1922, in rural Houston County, Minnesota, to Nicholas and Luella (Mackey) Schleich. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on November 20, 1942 and fought with the "Forgotten Battalion in the battles of Tarawa, Guam and Saipan. Omer was honorably discharged on October 12, 1945. He was proud of his service as a Marine, and was fond of wearing a cap that read, And On the 8th Day, God Created the Marines!

Omer married Lorene Lorenz on July 3, 1946. He owned, and drove dump trucks until October 1955 when he and Lorene purchased their farm on Union Ridge. They worked together to establish an outstanding herd of Registered Holsteins, and also enjoyed raising Registered Belgian horses. Although health issues forced them to sell the cattle and horses, Omer and Lorene continued to raise corn and hay until 2012. He enjoyed deer and turkey hunting, and making their secret recipe deer bologna.

Omer is survived by his wife, Lorene, and by his children: Bob Schleich of Phoenix, AZ, Jim (Brenda Fox) Schleich, Nancy (Tom) Nimmo, and Pat (Randy) Carlson all of Hokah, by eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Jed (Joyce) Schleich of La Crescent, MN, and sister-in-law Alice (Jack) Schleich of Caledonia, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, by brothers Duane, Jack and Valery, and by a son-in-law, Virgil Bjorge.

A Mass Of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM, on Wednesday, October 9,th th2013 at St. Peters Catholic Church in Hokah with Rev. Pratap Reddy Salibindla celebrating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Josephs Convent Cemetery, rural Hokah. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated, and will be donated to charities supported by Omer and Lorene. Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services La Crescent chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
