He was born in Sparta, Wis., on May 18, 1933, to Melvin and Stella (Pfaff) Nicol. He married Harriet (Kaiser) Johnson on July 10, 1973, in La Crosse. In his free time, Charlie enjoyed the outdoors camping, hunting and fishing. He also loved hanging out in his man cave, the garage, where you would often find him watching his beloved Packers. He attended the car shows in Iola, Wis. for many years and loved buying and selling old cars. It seemed like Charlie always had a new old car to drive around in. Charlie is survived by his wife, Harriet; two daughters, Cindy (Greg) Folcey and Connie (Bob) Rutz, both of La Crosse; six grandchildren, Jan (Renee) Weber, Thad Gehrke, Robbie Neas, Jason Folcey, Kim (Eric) Walker, and Michael Rutz; and three great grandchildren, Parker Gehrke, and Kailey and Elijah Walker, all of La Crosse. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Vicky Walters; a grandson, Kurt Walters; and his sisters and brothers, Eileen, William, Mahlon Butch, Francis, and June. A gathering for family and friends to celebrate Charlies life will be held on Saturday, October 26th, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m., at the V.F.W. Clubroom, 630 South 6th St., La Crosse. Private family burial will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse at a later date.
The family would like to thank Dr. Timothy Buckley and the nurses and staff on the 9th floor at Mayo Clinic Health Systems for the wonderful care they gave Charlie.
