She was born in La Crosse on January 19, 1938, to Adolph and Virginia (Tuma) Beier. She married Richard Bakke on June 8, 1958, in La Crosse. He preceded Doris in death on January 4, 2000.
Doris had been employed by Amundsons Village Bake Shop in La Crosse for 25 years and at the Franciscan Skemp Bakery for over six years. She also worked at Bethel Home in Viroqua for several years.
She was a member and past president of the Southside Senior Center in La Crosse; a member of the Nakomis Grandmothers Club and was its Grandmother of the Year in 2006; and a long-time member of St. Matthews Ev. Lutheran Church in Stoddard where she was a member of the Ladies Aid. In her free time, Doris enjoyed spending time with her family, working in the yard and tending to her flower garden, playing cards, going out to lunch, putting puzzles together, and reading. She also enjoyed doing genealogical research on the Beier and Bakke families.
Doris is survived by her children, Marcia (Steven) Jandt , Paul (Kristi) Bakke, Patricia (Randy) Nicolai, Heidi (Brad) Richardson, Melissa (Philip) Pederson, Douglas (Lori) Bakke, Steven (Amber) Bakke, and Kathryn (Rich) Smith; her grandchildren, Amanda (Jay) Jensen, Andrea Schmitz, Marc (Shannon) Jandt, Brooke Bakke, Toby Bakke, Christopher and Jeremy Nicolai, Jessica, Alyssa, and Brandon Bakke, Crystal, April, and Corey Richardson, Alex and Alyson Pederson, Angela and Luci Bakke, James Bakke, and John, Nina, and Emmie Curran; and her great grandchildren, Madysan, Karl, Kenady, Nehemiah, Alexis, Caleab, Mia, Kaylee, Natalie, and Malikia. She is also survived by a brother, Dale Beier; two sisters, Gretchen (Dan) Montgomery and Theresa (Roger) Zimmerman; sister-in-law, Elva Beier; brother-in-law, Carliss Larson; many nieces and nephews; good friends, Jim and Barb Rouse, Bev Jandt, and Nancy Eder; and other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband, Richard, she was also preceded in death by a son, Kevin; a daughter, Sandra; a granddaughter, Rosemary; a sister, Karen Larson; a brother, Duane Buddy Beier; a sister-in-law, Kay Beier; and two great nieces, Celeste and Naomi.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 19th, at 5:30 p.m., at St. Matthews Ev. Lutheran Church in Stoddard. Pastor Phil Arnold will officiate. Entombment in the Garden of Peace Mausoleum in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park will take place at a later date. Family and friends may call at the church on Sunday from 3:30 p.m. until the time of service. There will be a reception following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be donated in Doris memory.
