d. February 10, 2014

He was born in La Crosse on February 21, 1925, to Emil H. and Lillian (Papacek) Gundlach. He attended La Crosse schools then served with the United State Army during World War II, receiving two Bronze Stars for his service. He went on to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering. On August 5, 1950, Herb married the former Janet E. Feibig in La Crosse.

Herb worked for the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation based in La Crosse for over 35 years. He was a member of Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52 and Thomas Rooney V.F.W. Post 1530, both of La Crosse, and was also a member of the Masons, the Society of Professional Engineers, and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1920 of La Crosse.

Herb, being an engineer all his life, saw the beauty in function. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor and his witty comments fondly known as Herbisms.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Mix; and a son-in-law, John Garbis.
