Gladys F Stelter

Gladys F. Stelter - Gladys F. Stelter, 90, of La Crosse, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at the Bethany-Riverside Nursing Facility.

Gladys was born on the family farm in rural La Crosse, to August and Amelia (Doere) Breidel. She married Arnie Clements and they later divorced. Gladys then married Clair Carlson in 1951, and he preceded her in death in 1962. In 1975, Gladys married William Stelter and he preceded her in death in 1985.

Earlier in her life, Gladys worked as a nurses assistant and at the AutoLite plant in La Crosse. She later purchased The Corner Inn in downtown La Crosse, which she operated for many years until retiring. Gladys, who was affectionately known as Ma to her many friends, loved to cook for family and guests. She also enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, playing cards with friends and trips to the casinos.

Survivors include two sons, Steven (Carol) Carlson of La Crosse and Wayne (Jean) Clements of Rochester, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Ben (Ruth) Carlson, Samantha (Michael) Van Waardhuizen, Lori (James) Williams, Crystal Bjork, Keith Goyette, David Clements, and Michael Clements; many great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, and even one great, great, great grandchild; her twin sister, Gertrude Ritter of La Crosse; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her husbands, she was also preceded in death by a son, David Clements; a daughter, Lois Tucker; and siblings, Alfred, August, and Edwin Breidel, Annie Lusk, Rose Lusk, and Wilhelmina Strittmater.

A private family graveside service and burial was held at Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be given in Gladyss memory to Bethany-Riverside.

Gladyss family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Bethany-Riverside for the wonderful and compassionate care they extended to her over the years.
