Pete attended school in Dimock and Parkston, SD. He served in the US Army and upon discharge, moved to the La Crosse area where he met and married Rose Anna (Leis) Hundt. They were later divorced. Pete drove truck and peddled freight for nearly 30 years with Gross Common Carrier and held several other delivery jobs in the La Crosse area. When Pete was out and about in the La Crosse area, it was rare for him not to run someone that he knew. Pete was a member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge. He spent his time fishing, hunting, cutting wood, playing cards, watching sports, and helping family, friends, and neighbors with many projects. Pete is survived by his daughter Kathy NawT (Al) Johnson, Stoddard, WI; sons, John Mayer, Safford, AZ and Robert (Jody) Mayer, Minnetonka, MN; grandsons, Zachery Mayer, Minnetonka, MN and Reed Johnson, Stoddard, WI; granddaughter, Madison Mayer, Safford, AZ; brothers: Edmund (Arleen), Bill (Charlotte) and Dan (Shirley), Mitchell, SD; sisters: Adeline Heisinger, Mitchell, SD; Florence Rokusek, Freeman, SD; Jean (Roger) Shipman, Paola, KS; Sister Janice Mayer, Yankton, SD; sisters-in-law, Marlene Mayer, Anaheim, CA; Karen Mayer, Mitchell, SD; numerous nieces and nephews; and very special friend, Mary Ghelf, Viroqua, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: James, Harvey, and Lou; his sisters: Ragina Parker; Delores Hafner; Clara "Sherri" Novachich; sister-in-law, Sally Mayer; brothers-in-law: William VenOsdel, Gus Parker, Al Hafner, James Novachich , Fran Rokusek and Louis Heisinger; and daughter-in-law, Jennifer (Hunt) Mayer. The family would like to thank all the wonderful and caring people that work at the Valley View Healthcare in Houston, MN for making him feel at home during his stay there. Also, the family would like to thank the staff at Gundersen Health System for making his last days more comfortable. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, March 8, 2014 at The Church of the Crucifixion, La Crescent, MN, Rev. Gregory Havel will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm with a rosary at 7:30 pm, on Friday evening at the Schumacher Kish Funeral and Cremation Services La Crescent chapel; 111 South Oak St. Visitation will also be held at the church on Saturday morning from 9:30 A.M. until the time of Mass. Burial, with military honors, will be held at a later date at the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Dimock, SD.
