He was born on the family farm on Pumpkin Ridge, rural Chaseburg, Wis., on December 30, 1923, to August and Freda (Proksch) Kapanke. On June 12, 1957, he married Janet M. Staddler at Wesley United Methodist Church in La Crosse. Janet preceded him in death on April 17, 2010.

Harry served with the U. S. Army near the conclusion of World War II, serving overseas in Japan. He worked for the La Crosse Cooler Company in La Crosse from 1958 until 1983. He also owned and operated a surveyor stakes business from 1971 until retiring in 2004. As he neared retirement he sold his business and worked for Northern Wood Products for a short time.

Harry was a long-time active member of Mt. Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church in La Crosse where he served on the Church Council for many years. He was also a member of Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52 of La Crosse.

Harry is survived by two daughters, Shirley (Nick) Chapiewsky of Sparta, Wis. and Susan (Paul) Scriver of Kansasville, Wis.; one son, Jim (Debra) Kapanke of Rockland, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Sara (Mark) Flaig, Katie Chapiewsky, Phillip (Danielle) Scriver, Heather (Paul) Huebner, Bryan Scriver (fianc, Bailey Fenske), Emily Scriver, and Jason Reynolds; and four great grandchildren, Benjamin Flaig, Rogan and Weston Scriver, and Kyla Huebner. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Arlene Kapanke of La Crosse; a brother-in-law, Herman Sime of Ferryville, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Janet, Harry was also preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Gary Smith; two brothers, Elmer Kapanke and an infant brother, Robert; two sisters, Clara Harter and Alice Sime; and a brother-in-law, Lloyd Harter.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, March 17th, at Mt. Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church, 1411 South 16th St., La Crosse. Pastor Robert Wassermann will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Family and friends may call at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services of La Crosse, located at 200 West Ave. So., on Sunday from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m., and at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Harrys family would like to thank the staffs at Hillview Terrace and Hillview Health Care Center for their wonderful care. Special thanks also to Pastor Robert Wassermann and Larry Clark for their many visits.
